Resident of the Month: Bernice B.
Resident of the month is Bernice B. Mrs. B. was born on November 4, 1918 at her grandfather’s house in the Terryville community of DeWitt County. She is the third of seven children born to Frank and Lena Dickinson. Her childhood nickname was “Bunny”. Bernice’s only surviving sibling is her youngest sister, Nelda Hunter of Iola, Texas. Bernice graduated from Yoakum High School in 1935 at the age of 16. In those days’ public school only went to 11 grades, and her grades were so good she was able to skip one of the grammar school grades. On June 6, 1936 she married Homer L. B. at the Methodist Church in Yoakum. The only people in attendance were her mother and aunt Bessie. Bernice and Homer were married until his death in 2001. Bernice has 6 children, 16 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Bernice devoted her life to being a mother and wife, she also taught Sunday School and spent 18 years working at the Yoakum Primary School. Mrs. B. celebrated her 100th Birthday with us here at Stevens on November 4th.
